Phoenix Chamber Folk Ensemble

The Phoenix Chamber Folk Ensemble aims to provide an opportunity for competent players to learn, and perform, challenging and musically interesting arrangements of folk repertoire. It was established in January 2020 and met four times before the Covid-19 lockdown. With the easing of lockdown restrictions, we resumed face to face rehearsals in September 2021.

Membership is open to competent players of any instrument, although places may be limited in order to achieve a good balance.

New season (Sept 2022 - June 2023)

If you are interested in joining in the Ensemble, please get in touch before signing up. New members are welcome.

Face to face rehearsals take place on a monthly basis, supplemented by occasional practice sessions on Zoom (subject to demand). All rehearsals will take place at St George’s URC, Newton Road, High Heaton, NE7 7HP.

Fees are payable twice per year (in September and February) and are £35 for each 5 session block. If this is not affordable and you need to pay a little less, then feel free to use pay our reduced rate of £25 instead. We operate an honesty policy – no questions asked.

Members will be given access to a members-only area of the website where they can find sheet music and practice video/audio.

Resuming 'In Person' Reharsals

We resumed ‘in person’ rehearsals in September 2021, with a number of safety measures in place:

  • we have hired a larger rehearsal space, and chairs will be set out to enable social distancing
  • windows will remain open for ventilation
  • face coverings must be worn at all times indoors, unless you have advised us of a recognised exemption (wind players may, of course, remove their masks when playing)
  • members are politely asked to take a lateral flow test in the 24 hours preceding an in-person rehearsal. We recognise that we cannot enforce this, but the leaders will be self testing and there is an expectation that all members do the same
  • members can bring their own refreshments to keep by their chair but we will not hold a coffee break. If members wish to, we can have a short break for members wishing to get some fresh air.
  • members are expected to follow relevant good practice in relation to self isolation, hygiene and respecting each others personal space

We will keep these measures under review, but there is an expectation that members will observe these while they are in place, so please bear this in mind when you sign up.
