Join us for a series of intimate folk concerts in our tempoary home of St George’s Church Hall while Cullercoats Watch House is undergoing renovation. Please bring your own refreshments. There will also be a short support set.
There will be an instrumental workshop “Introduction to Caribbean Music” and an evening gig. Both for either or both.
Workshop (2pm – 5pm)
Dive into the rich rhythms and vibrant sounds of the Caribbean! This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the musical traditions of the Caribbean – from Barbados to the Bahamas and beyond. Using a selection of classic Caribbean folk tunes, we will cover musical style, technique and groove while exploring how this music tells the stories of Caribbean culture and history. No prior experience of Caribbean music needed, just bring your curiosity and a sense of rhythm!
Level: This workshop is suitable for players of any melody instrument. Participants should be comfortable with picking out melodies on their instrument (either by ear or from written music). Contact Cohen on cohen@cohenbk.com if you have any questions about level requirements.
Gig (7.30pm – 9.45pm)
Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne is at the forefront of his generation of English folk musicians as both a powerful and commanding singer and a masterful player of the Anglo concertina and melodeon. Since bursting onto the scene in his teens, Cohen has amassed a string of awards and nominations, including a nomination for the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Horizon Award in 2018, and has toured extensively across the UK and abroad, both as a soloist and with the much-loved energetic trio Granny’s Attic. Expect traditional songs and tunes along with some self-penned material and a few surprises along the way.
